Swiss Act Nemo Tops Eurovision Betting Odds – Could ESC 2025 be Held in Switzerland?

The hype surrounding the Swiss act at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 is real. Since Nemo (lead photo) moved up to number 1 in the ESC betting odds on Monday, more and more people in Switzerland have been asking themselves whether and how the competition could be held in their own country next year. The Swiss television SRF has now published a report on this, for which the national delegation leader Yves Schifferle was also interviewed. The main focus is on the venue and financing.

Switzerland is in ESC fever. After Lys Assia in 1956 and Celine Dion in 1988, Nemo could win the third ESC victory for the Swiss in May. If it comes to that, the responsible broadcaster SRF would have the right to hold the competition in Switzerland in 2025 – with all the advantages and disadvantages. Because with the ESC you can not only present your country and its culture internationally. There are also significant costs that need to be covered. And that’s when the Swiss start to listen up.

The Swiss television website has now also taken up this topic and spoke to Nemo and delegation leader Yves Schifferle. Nemo takes the betting odds positively, but not euphorically: “That’s a really nice sign. People are excited, believe in the song and that motivates me a lot.” Nemo also made similar comments at ESC compact LIVE (see below). Yves Schifferle isn’t getting too cocky either: “The whole team is really happy about this reception, it gives us a boost. We are now concentrating on the performance, are rehearsing and still have a lot to do before Malmö.”

However, his thoughts also look forward and in the article he lists some requirements for a possible venue. This must have a large hall and offer good infrastructure. According to Yves, “Zurich, Bern, Geneva or Basel would be an issue,” according to the website. He did not say which specific halls these would be.

In addition, there is an exchange with those responsible for the ESC in recent years in the Netherlands, Portugal and Italy regarding the actual costs. Of course, different figures are publicly available as to how much an ESC costs, but a distinction must be made when it comes to production costs and other expenses for the event.

In any case, Yves Schifferle makes it clear that the city in which the ESC would take place would have to cover a large part of the costs. On the plus side, there are also the fees from the national broadcasters participating in the ESC as well as income from ticket sales and from advertising partners. In this respect, SRG, the Swiss Radio and Television Company, i.e. the umbrella organization to which the broadcaster SRF belongs, would not have to bear all the costs alone.

How likely do you think it is that the ESC 2025 will take place in Switzerland? And which city would you like to host in this case? Leave us your opinion in the comments.
