Spain is dry. Temperatures have been above 40ºC for some time now and some parts of the country are under heat alert.

As the impact of climate change intensifies in southern Europe, the province of Castellón is experiencing the worst drought in its history.

Due to the severe drought, filling the pools has been banned.

Affected localities include Doras, El Toro and Barracas, and in some areas there has been no rain for more than eight months.

Reservoir levels have been reduced by a quarter, preventing water use by residents, visitors, agriculture and industry.

The mayors of the three municipalities issued a joint statement on Friday, calling on residents to “use water responsibly.”

In addition to banning the filling of ponds, people have been advised not to wash their vehicles or water their gardens.

City councils have stopped watering parks and gardens and filling municipal swimming pools.

Vicente Tejedo, the newly appointed Regional Secretary for Agriculture, told local media: ‘We are clearly suffering from a lack of rain.

“We have been warning about the drought and its consequences for months.
