At 10or Alkis Kynigakis finished in first place in the grueling marathon swimming race, which took place in the murky waters of the Seine. The Greek champion, who in Tokyo had finished 5th in the corresponding race, covered the 10 kilometers of the route in 1h52:37.2.
After the finish, he thanked his coach Spyros Gianniotis and talked about the many obstacles he had to face in the last three years. “I didn’t have a team next to me. Instead of the roads opening up for me after Tokyo, they were narrowed for me. I don’t understand why they treated me like that. They know who they are. I gave my soul. I used to wake up and think about these matches. I did everything. Whatever came before me from the inside I went through. Not right and left, I went through it from the inside. If I sit down and write a book about these years, you are not going to imagine. I have lost myself through this journey. What I would like to request is that you be closer to the athletes. To love them and not see them as enemies.”
Gianniotis had won a silver medal in the same event at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
