For a long time, Florian Wellbrock from Bremen was among the front runners in the ten-kilometer open water of the Seine. In the end, however, he could no longer keep up with the pace.

Florian Wellbrock was unable to win a medal in Paris, even in his third start. After he was eliminated in the preliminary rounds of the 800-meter and 1,500-meter pools, there was no happy ending for the 26-year-old in the Seine.

Three years ago in Tokyo, Wellbrock won gold in the ten-kilometer open water race. And on Friday morning, it initially looked as if he might win a medal. Wellbrock was in second place for a long time and was able to overtake Kristóf Rasovszky, the first-place finisher from Hungary, at times, and thus lead the field.

In the last third of the race, however, Wellbrock had to let go. He fell back to eighth place. This was a burden before the start of the last of the six laps through the Seine. In this lap, Wellbrock had to let the leading group go. He could no longer keep up with their pace. In the end, he only managed eighth place.

Rasovsky won gold (1:50:52.7) ahead of the German Oliver Klemet (silver) and the Hungarian Dávid Bethlehem (bronze). Wellbrock finished after 1:51:54.4 hours, more than a minute later than Rasovsky.
