She sounds minimalistic, Missy Elliott-like on “Ring-a-Ling,” in which the 28-year-old effortlessly switches back and forth between fast-paced raps and R&B singing. But these relatively rough singles released in the lead-up to the album actually misled fans. Because the “Sweet Justice” is actually pretty sweet and groovy.
Gorovy separation happiness
For example, there is the piece “Ghost!”, which begins as a ballad and continues as 80s vocal house, wonderfully staged by Beatwizard Kaytranada. In contrast to the smooth backing, we hear lyrics in which she energetically breaks up with her boyfriend and explains that she can do without his final sermon: “Why keep talking that shit to me?”
The beat for “Won One” is a bit reminiscent of 90s RnB à la Destinys Child – with hectic beats in the style of Darkchild or Timbaland. The lyrics are about fake feelings and some melodies are somehow reminiscent of the French trash pop song “Femme Like U” by K.Maro. “Gone To The West” with the rapper Duckwrth is also interesting. In it we hear a sample from Bernard Wright’s “Spinnin”, the brass section became world famous as part of Skee-Lo’s rap super hit “I Wish”. There are also many warm jazzy chords and excursions into different genres on the other songs.
Justice and genre bending
“Sweet Justice” is only partly an album about justice or even revenge. It’s often about disappointed relationships, but it’s also about Tkay continuing to develop after difficult situations. And many songs are just very confident raps about everything she’s built up over the last ten years. The neo soul track “Walking On Air” is the grand finale, a forgiving pop moment in which she finds inner peace and focuses on her personal growth. On “Sweet Justice” Tkay Maidza often presents herself as very melodic, but not necessarily conciliatory, but always as a self-confident woman with style and skills.
