Swedish Van Stopped at Border for Illegal Cargo: Flagpoles

On Tuesday, a Swedish van was on its way across the border to Norway at Svinesund, but was quickly informed that this would not be possible with the cargo they were carrying.

The Swedes were tasked with transporting flagpoles, but the vehicle proved not to be optimal for this. It was simply illegal cargo.

The longest legal length for cargo on the vehicle in question is twelve metres, and these flagpoles were 16.8 meters long, the Norwegian Road Administration writes in a press release.

– The flagpoles also protruded 7.2 meters in front of the vehicle, the maximum allowed is one metre, it says.

It was therefore not possible for the Swedes to get over to Norway with the flagpoles this time. And it seems that they were determined that the blunder should not cost more than first expected.

– In order to avoid the cost of a larger transport, they chose to carry the load back to Sweden, where they had permission to transport the goods, writes the National Road Administration.

Pedestrians cannot cross the Svinesund Bridge, and the Swedes thus had to walk a short distance. according to Fredrikstad Blad is the shortest route three kilometers long and takes 38 minutes to walk. Without flagpoles, mind you.

The flagpoles were carried across the border, which was captured on the Statens vegvesen’s cameras. The driver of the car was reported for the relationship.
