Swedish Syrian Alleged Smuggler Arrested After Police Chase with Van of 26 Syrian Refugees

The police stopped a van with 26 Syrian refugees in Styria on Sunday. The alleged smuggler, a Swede of Syrian origin, pressed the gas and fled with risky maneuvers after a civilian patrol wanted to stop the van on the southern autobahn (A2) in the Ilz area. The police took up the pursuit, after about 60 kilometers the officials managed to stop through a roadblock, according to a broadcast on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old driver suspected of smuggling was arrested, and he put up massive resistance. He denied the accusation of smuggling and only admitted to the dangerous journey. By order of the public prosecutor’s office, he was taken to a prison.

The dragged are twelve adults and 14 minors. They were cared for and taken to the Spielfeld border management for interrogation. They applied for asylum. The police are now trying to determine which route the Syrians used to get to Austria and the EU area, and they are also looking for evidence of organized crime in the background.
