Swedish speed cameras increasingly stolen, perhaps for Russian drones | NOW

Destroyed speed cameras have been found in Sweden for months, writes the Swedish newspaper The evening paper. The Swedish government suspects Russia is using flash equipment in drones that the country is deploying during the war in Ukraine. According to local media, photographic equipment was stolen by two speed cameras in an area north of Stockholm on Wednesday.

More than 100 speed cameras have been vandalized and looted in various Swedish regions since the end of August, the newspaper reports. Swedish police confirm the thefts and say they are investigating them.

“We are aware of rumors that the equipment is used in Russian home-built drones, but we cannot go into the details of our intelligence work,” a spokesperson for the Swedish National Security Service Säpo told the newspaper.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense had previously posted an online video of a crashed Russian drone being taken apart. It showed how a Canon camera was attached to the self-made drone with velcro. The type of camera was similar to the cameras used in Swedish speed cameras.

The “amateur construction” is second The evening paper succeeded. Russia would use drones to locate Ukrainian forces. It is unclear whether the cameras are also part of the kamikaze drones that Russia recently deployed to … to attack about Ukrainian cities.

The destroyed speed cameras cost Sweden a lot of money. For speed cameras, this would be a damage of around 250,000 Swedish kronor (more than 22,700 euros).
