Joost Klein Parody Sparks Controversy at Swedish national Song Festival
The Swedish Public Omroep, SVT, stirred controversy during the semi-final of the Swedish national song festival on Saturday evening. A parody of Dutch singer Joost Klein, who was disqualified from the Eurovision Song Contest in 2024, unexpectedly appeared during the introduction of the six candidates. The seventh candidate, dressed in a blonde wig, large black glasses, and a blue jacket, made a threatening movement toward the camera. the presenters quickly clarified that this “Joost” was disqualified, referencing the real-life incident that led too Klein’s removal from the competition.
Joost Klein, representing the Netherlands, was barred from participating in the Eurovision final in May 2024 following a collision with a camera operator. Despite initial concerns, the Swedish prosecutor announced in mid-August that Klein would not face charges due to a lack of evidence.
The incident prompted AVROTROS,the Dutch broadcaster responsible for the country’s Eurovision participation,to engage in intensive discussions with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). These talks addressed not only the “unnecessary and disproportionate” disqualification but also widespread complaints about the unsafe working conditions behind the scenes. After securing several commitments, the Netherlands agreed to return to the competition the following year.
In response to the parody, AVROTROS released a statement calling the SVT promotion “a pity and faint.” A spokesperson added, “But for us, this chapter has since been closed.” Fans of joost Klein took to social media to express their disapproval, labeling the skit as “tasteless” and “disrespectful.”
