Swedish Prosecutors to Announce Updates on 2022 Nord Stream Pipeline Explosions Investigation

05 Feb 2024 at 16:50

Swedish prosecutors will announce more this week about their investigation into the 2022 explosions near the Nord Stream pipelines. The gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea were sabotaged two years ago, but it is still unclear by whom.

Prosecutors will announce later this week whether they will prosecute people, detain someone or whether they may drop the case.

The Nord Stream 1 and 2 are pipelines that could transport Russian gas to Germany. The Nord Stream 1 has actually transported gas for years. It was the main supply to Western Europe. The other pipeline was never put into service.

Already in the course of 2021, Russia began to slowly cut off supplies, resulting in less and less gas flowing to Europe. It caused the gas price to rise considerably. The energy bill for households rose accordingly.

Four explosions took place in September 2022, almost completely sabotaging the pipes. Since then, gas has stopped flowing to Europe via the Baltic Sea.

The explosions took place in the sea, in the so-called economic areas of Sweden and Denmark. Who is responsible for the explosions has so far remained a mystery. Russia, Ukraine and Western countries have made mutual accusations.

Swedish prosecutors may provide more clarity about this this week. The Danes have also started an investigation. It is not yet known when they will report results.
