During a press conference on Wednesday, Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Löfven stated that the restrictions for social gatherings will be extended.
The government and the health authorities had planned relief on 17 May for, among others, the public at cultural and sports events, but instead the prime minister came with bad news.
– In consultation with the regions, we can state that we are not there today. Even though we see that the infection is declining nationally, it is still high. Therefore, the government has today decided that these adjusted rules for public gatherings will enter into force on 1 June, the Prime Minister said.
He says the new rules can come into force just over two weeks later than planned, June 1. If the recommendations are followed, life can become more normal in September, is Wednesday’s message.
The number of reported cases of infection per week is declining slightly in Sweden, which is still among the countries with the highest infection pressure in the world.
1,027,934 cases of infection have been registered, 6,330 of them in the last 24 hours.
According to the Swedish Public Health Agency, over three million people in Sweden have received the first dose of coronary vaccine. One in ten is fully vaccinated.
