Swedish Police Suspect Sabotage After Another Ore Train Derails on Malmbanen

Swedish police suspect sabotage after an ore train derailed on the Malmbanen between Narvik and Kiruna on Saturday.

Monday 26 February at 13:27

It was an empty ore train that derailed at Vassijaure station on the Swedish side of the railway line at the weekend.

According to Swedish Television the accident occurred in the same place as a serious incident on 17 December last year, when a fully loaded train with ore derailed and caused major damage to the track, with a total stop in the transport of ore from the iron ore mines in northern Sweden to the port of Narvik.

Traffic had only been running for a few days after the previous derailment, when another accident hit the stretch of track.

According to Swedish police, the incident is currently categorized as sabotage, but the police emphasize that the investigation may open up other explanations.

The Malmbanen – or Ofotbanen as it is called on the Norwegian side – is the northernmost railway connection between Norway and Sweden. It connects Narvik and the harbor there with the Swedish railway network.
