In April 2023, a Swedish expectant mother who was seven months pregnant was strangled to death by her Muslim boyfriend with the wire of a bedside lamp. According to prosecutors, the reason for her death may be that her boyfriend performed an “honor killing” on her due to pressure from Muslim culture.
Saga Forsgren Elneborg is a Swedish woman living in Orebro, a two-hour drive from the capital Stockholm. In April 2023, she was found dead in the bedroom of her home, with a wire wrapped around her neck. At this time, she was already 7 months pregnant.

According to Saga’s family, Saga was very excited about the fact that she was giving birth to a new life. She always happily shared her pregnancy changes and feelings on social media, and had arranged a crib in her new home in advance. Lots of baby clothes and tiny sneakers. In a pregnancy photo shared by Saga on social media, you can see her holding her swollen pregnancy belly with a very peaceful expression, and you can feel that she is wholeheartedly looking forward to the arrival of a new life. Saga’s mother recalled in an interview, “She was very happy. She would move to a new apartment and start her life as a mother.”
However, Saga’s boyfriend Mohamedamin Abdirisek Ibrahim is a refugee from Somalia. His family is an extremely conservative Muslim family. They are very resistant to the situation of a woman getting pregnant out of wedlock, considering it a sin that violates the teachings. Will be rejected by society.
It is reported that when Muhammad learned that he had a child, his first thought was to give up this life, but Saga disagreed. She told Muhammad that even without the support of her boyfriend, she would give birth to the child and raise it on her own.

Muhammad did not object to Saga’s insistence. He still lived with Saga and even made a commitment to their future. But on the other hand, he hid the fact that his girlfriend was pregnant from his parents.
“He never told his family about Saga or the child. The suspect was raised with honor standards and knew he could not date a white woman,” said Elisabeth Anderson, the prosecutor who investigated Saga’s murder. “He must date women of the same cultural background. If he does not do so, he will be excluded from his ethnic group,” the investigative report reads.
On April 28, 2023, Muhammad told Saga that he would go home for a party, and promised his girlfriend before going out that he would confess the relationship to his family and convince his family to accept her. However, that night, Muhammad sneaked into the home and strangled Saga with the cord of the bedside lamp.
This murder case will be tried on April 10, 2024. The reason why this murder case dragged on for so long was because Muhammad always refused to plead guilty, saying that he had not committed any wrongdoing and that he still loved his girlfriend. But the police said they had found sufficient evidence to charge Muhammad, and prosecutors prepared a 1,000-page investigation report and were determined to bring Muhammad to justice.
After Saga’s death, as the case came to light one after another, it caused a huge shock to the local people. Many people took to the streets to remember Saga and rethink Sweden’s refugee policy.
