Spanish police have arrested a man in connection with the October 16 attack in Brussels. The Belgian authorities had requested his arrest.
It is unclear what role he had in the attack. According to the Spanish police, he had ties to the perpetrator. The man was arrested in the town of Benahavis in southern Spain. During the search of his home, papers, devices and “a significant amount of money” were seized.
He is said to have used forged papers to stay out of sight of the authorities. There was already an arrest warrant against him for drug and weapons smuggling, money laundering and membership of a criminal organization, the Spanish police reported.
Islamic State
Two Swedes were killed in a terrorist attack in Brussels last Monday. A third person was injured. Abdesalem L., who is believed to be the shooter, died after police shot him in a cafe where they attempted to arrest him. The weapon that was allegedly used in the attacks was also found with the suspected perpetrator.
The Swedes were in Brussels because the country’s national football team played a match against Belgium.
In a video that subsequently appeared, the man claimed responsibility for the attack. He said he was inspired by the Islamic State terrorist group. He also cited the Swedish nationality of the victims as a motive.
