Swedish Discus Thrower Daniel Ståhl Wins Second WC Gold with Record-Breaking Throw

– It’s the best thing I’ve ever done, in terms of results and in an arena. I am incredibly proud, says the Swedish discus thrower Daniel Ståhl after winning the second WC gold of his career.

The final throw measured 71.46 meters – a championship record that secured victory for the Swede.

Kristjan Ceh of Slovenia had indicated that he wanted to defend his gold from the Eugene World Championships last year with a throw that measured 70.02. That meant he took the lead before the very last throw.

Then Ståhl showed power and technique with the knife to the throat.

– I thought I would answer right away, I was 1,000 percent focused on being as big as possible in the movement and taking action for king and fatherland, he says.

– I am very proud of myself and how I handled it.

The 30-year-old sent the discus a full 71.46 meters. Then he slowly stepped out onto the infield, ended up in front of a scoreboard, and when the length became official, visible, dropped to one knee and clenched his fist in a victory gesture.

– I felt it would be really long. I was fully focused on staying in the ring and then when the result came… I didn’t see how far it was but when I saw it on the board: wow!

Second WC gold

After the qualification, Daniel Ståhl promised more in the WC final. He talked about how it was “calm throws” and that it was time for “rock’n’roll”.

With his longest throw of the season, he offered a cracking finish.

The WC success in Budapest led to Daniel Ståhl’s second WC gold in his career. He has also previously won Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020, EC silver in Berlin 2018 and WC silver in London 2017.

Kristijan Ceh took silver in 70.02 and Mykolas Alekna, Lithuania, bronze in 68.85.
