Swedish director Ruben Östlund’s ‘Triangle of Sadness’ wins the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival

The 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival ends, in the south of France. Sweden’s Ruben Östlund won the Palme d’Or for the second time with his film ‘Triangle of Sadness’. The event was marked by two ex-aequo awards and the opening of the night with the speech of the Ukrainian president Volodímir Zelenski.

21 were the films that competed for the highest award at the Cannes Festival: the Palme d’Or. This Saturday the jury chaired by French actor Vincent Lindon awarded the distinction to the film ‘Triangle of Sadness’, by Swedish director Ruben Östlund.

The film is an anti-capitalist satire that portrays the Western world as ridiculing the rich and influencers at the same time that he mocks the cult of money and image.


In 2017, Östlund had already won the award with “The Square”, but this is his first film in English and which has an international cast that includes the American Woody Harrelson.

“Provoking reflection with provocation”, is how the Swedish director cataloged the objective of his film on stage at the Palais des Festivals.

Some unusual accolades

The 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival culminated in other awards, one of the most notable was the Special Jury Prize, or the Grand Prize, which was ex-aequo (‘equally’) for the French Claire Denis for “Stars at Noon” and for the Belgian Lukas Dhont for “Close”.

Another unusual recognition was the Jury Prize, which was also divided between “Le otto montagne” by the Belgians Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch and “Eo” by the Pole Jerzy Skolimowski.

On the other hand, the South Korean Park Chan-Wook was decorated as the best director for his film “Heojil Kyolshim / Decision to leave”.

The Best Actress Award went to the Iranian Zar Amir Ebrahimi for “Holy Spider/The Nights of Mashhad” directed by the Danish filmmaker of Iranian origin Ali Abbasi.

While the Best Actor Award went to South Korean Song Kang Ho for “Broker/The Good Stars” by Kore-Eda Hirokazu.

This year’s event was marked by a special prize for the brothers Jean Pierre and Luc Dardenne, who competed with “Tori and Lokita. At the same time as the speech of the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky during its opening. It also highlighted the appearance of the American actor Tom Cruise presenting the movie Top Gun.
