Court Sweden cancel the decision of the local police in banning the action burning of the Koran during demonstrations in the country.
As reported AFPWednesday (5/4/2023), the burning of the Koran which was carried out outside the Turkish Embassy building in Stockholm last January has sparked anger among Muslims around the world, with a series of demonstrations held for weeks and there were calls for a product boycott. Sweden’s Supreme Administrative Court overturned a police decision to ban two protests involving the burning of Korans in February. The Supreme Court emphasized in its decision that concerns about security risks are not sufficient to limit the right to demonstrate.
“The police authorities did not have sufficient support for his decision,” judge Eva-Lotta Hedin said in her ruling.
In response, Swedish Police insisted on defending its decision to ban demonstrations involving the burning of Korans.
“We are of the opinion that our decision was correct,” Swedish Police spokeswoman Ola Osterling told news agencies TT.
Osterling added that the police would consider whether to appeal the decision or not.
Swedish police had previously refused to issue permits for the Koran burning that was staged outside the Turkish and Iraqi embassies in Stockholm in February, arguing that similar demonstrations in January had made Sweden a “higher priority target for attack’.
