The Swedish company Northvolt claims to have developed a new, cost-effective battery that can be produced without lithium or other rare substances.
The development of the new sodium battery was announced Tuesday. The company believes it can, among other things, be used for energy storage in developing countries.
Compared to lithium-ion batteries, sodium batteries cannot store as much energy per kilogram. But instead they have other advantages.
According to Northvolt, their new battery is relatively cheap and safe even at high temperatures. Since it is produced without rare minerals, it can make battery production less dependent on raw materials from China. As of today, China dominates the market for a number of relatively rare elements.
– The low costs and safety at high temperatures make the technology particularly attractive for energy storage in emerging markets such as India, the Middle East and Africa, says a statement from Northvolt.
Lack of good solutions for energy storage has so far been a challenge when developing renewable energy on a large scale. Both solar and wind power are highly variable, and batteries are one possible solution for storing energy for times when the sun is not shining and the wind is calm.
