Today, during his official visit to Stockholm, President Egils Levits met with the Prime Minister of Sweden, Stefan Leven. During the meeting, Egils Levits called on Swedish companies to invest in Rail Baltica infrastructure. The Swedish Prime Minister confirmed the interest of his country’s entrepreneurs in this project.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the excellent interstate relations in this special year, which marks the centenary of Sweden’s recognition of Latvia. by right and 30 years since the resumption of diplomatic relations.
“Sweden, as the largest investor in Latvia and the country with the largest trade volume for Latvia, will continue to be an important partner for economic cooperation,” the President emphasized. E. Levits also emphasized that political, economic, cultural and other co-operation is also important on a larger scale – the Baltic and Nordic countries, as well as the European Union.
The two sides discussed the development of the Rail Baltica project and the opportunities offered by the Three Seas Initiative.
Mr Levits and Mr Leven also emphasized the importance of Baltic-Nordic co-operation in science, research and technology to promote the development and competitiveness of the region and the European Union as a whole. Satisfaction was expressed about the memoranda of cooperation concluded during the official visit between the University of Latvia, Uppsala University and the Karolinska Institute.
Topical issues of the European Union’s Eastern Partnership were discussed, supporting the process of European integration of Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova. Discussing the situation in Belarus, E. Levits and S. Levēns expressed the support of Latvia and Sweden for further strict sanctions of the European Union against Belarus, expressing support for the democratic aspirations of the Belarusian people.
The promotion of NATO’s relations with Sweden was discussed in the framework of NATO’s partnership policy, emphasizing the common interests in guaranteeing the security of the region.
Both sides emphasized the importance of the transatlantic relationship, which unites countries in the NATO partnership to defend the values of democracy and security.
