Jakarta –
Recently, there was an act of burning the Koran outside a mosque in the capital city Sweden horrendous. Now, Swedish authorities even allow demonstrations by burning the Torah and the Bible outside the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm.
Reported CNN, on Friday (14/7/2023) local time, someone submitted an application for permission to carry out the action by burning holy books on Saturday (15/7). The request was then allowed.
The European Jewish Congress (EJC) condemned the Swedish authorities’ decision. EJC considers that the decision reflects a minority.
“This kind of provocative, racist, antisemitic and sickening act has no place in any civilized society,” EJC President Ariel Muzicant said in a statement.
Israeli President Condemns Swedish Authority Decision
Israeli President Isaac Herzog also condemned the Swedish authorities’ decision. He said he was heartbroken over the decision.
“I strongly condemn the permission given in Sweden to burn holy books. As President of Israel, I condemn the burning of the Koran, which is sacred to Muslims all over the world, and I am now heartbroken that the same fate awaits the Jewish Bible, the eternal book of the people- Jews,” Herzog wrote on Twitter.
Sweden Was Considering Rules Banning Al-Qur’an Burning
The Swedish government is considering banning or making it illegal to burn the Koran or other holy books of religious teachings. The move was considered after the burning of the Koran, some time ago, was considered to have damaged Sweden’s security.
As reported Reuters, Friday (7/7), an Iraqi refugee living in Sweden burned a copy of the Koran outside a mosque in Stockholm last week, sparking outrage among Muslims worldwide. Criticism also poured in from many parties, including Pope Francis.
The Swedish Security Service said that such actions had made the country less secure.
Earlier this year, Swedish police refused a number of applications for permits for demonstrations involving the burning of the Koran on security grounds.
However, the court later overturned the police decision, insisting that such actions are protected by a law governing freedom of speech in Sweden.
