In Sweden, the armed forces will be involved in the fight against criminal gangs. This was stated by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
The prime minister yesterday discussed with the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and the commissioner of the National Police how to stop gang violence after a wave of attacks in September that killed at least 11 people, Reuters reports. In particular, two were killed in Stockholm during a shootout on Wednesday, and a 20-year-old woman died in Uppsala after a bomb exploded in her house on Thursday morning.
“Sweden has never seen anything like this before… No other country in Europe has seen anything like this,” Kristersson said in a televised address to the nation on Thursday.
It is unclear in what capacity the military will be involved in solving the problem, but there have been previous proposals for soldiers to take over policing of populated areas and the police would have more resources to fight crime.
