Apple’s App Store Awards 2021 ended with two Swedish game developers receiving an award. The apps were selected according to certain criteria, which were quality, innovative technology, creative design and positive cultural impact.
During the presentation, Tim Cook said: “The developers who won the App Store Awards 2021 used their own drive and vision to deliver this year’s best apps and games – which aroused the creativity and passion of millions of users around the world.”
Among this year’s best apps and games was Swedish Toca Life World, developed by Swedish Toca Boca, which won the title Iphone App of the Year. A surprised winner of the title Apple TV Game of the Year was Mattias Olsson, founder and CEO of Pixelbite, whose game Space Marshals 3 impressed the jury.
– It came as a total surprise. We received a package sent to us from Apple, but we were instructed not to open it. Then we got to participate in video conversations with a lot of other developers and only then did we get to open the package, which contained an App Store Award, says Mattias Olsson via a noisy video link.
We asked how a game developer should go about designing a game for Apple Arcade, what the limitations are and the challenges.
– Usually it is more difficult when you do not have a joypad, but the fact is that it was easier with touch control. Other challenges are to drive the action forward without dialogue, but it went well.
Another winner was the role-playing game Fantasian, produced and created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, who, among other things, is behind the game series Final Fantasy. Together with the game studio Mistwalker, they received the award for Apple Arcade Game of the Year.
– When I started creating the game, my thought was that this would be my last game, I wanted to give everything. In Fantasian was used diorama as backgrounds and computer-animated characters together for the first time. We spent a huge amount of time on all the thumbnails to create atmosphere in the game, Hironobu Sakaguchi told M3.
The game undeniably looks delicious and by mixing real objects with computer animated, the game gets a sense of reality.
