Buying an abandoned apartment in Sweden brought a grisly surprise to the new owner: the old owner. Not only did the resident elder appear to have died in his home for years, but he also passed away during appraisal and apartment visits.
The Gothenburg house went up for sale in May because the resident had not paid the bills. The bailiff offered the apartment in the condition it was found in, according to Swedish media littered with garbage and smelling of garbage.
The body of the former owner’s gang was not discovered until weeks after the purchase in June. The resident, an 80-year-old man, has been dead for at least two years, according to police. His supposedly mummified remains were partly hidden under a bed.
Don’t look around
The man’s daughter says she has been estranged from her father for years. However, she is stunned that the apartment was not searched properly and that the bailiff did not contact the family to find out where the old resident had gone. She also wants her belongings back from her.
A spokesperson for the government trustee who sold the apartment says that, for privacy reasons, the belongings of the former residents were not thoroughly examined and therefore the body was missing. According to her, getting close to relatives is not part of the protocol.
He also adds that it is more common for the old owner to be found dead in foreclosure sales.
