Sweden’s Ugliest Lawn Competition Promotes Water Conservation and Sustainability

Jakarta

Do you have a barren and unkempt garden? Relax, you are not alone.

An unkempt and barren garden is nothing to be ashamed of, at least if you live in Sweden. The reason is, there is a competition to make the ugliest garden there.

A garden or yard competition is called Ugliest Lawn, or the ugliest garden grass in the world.

Quoted from CNN, Saturday (13/1/2024), people from all over the world were invited to upload pictures of their dehydrated grass to social media in an effort to win awards.

The goal, according to those behind the project, is to raise awareness of “water savings on a global scale by changing the norm for green lawns.”

The competition was launched in collaboration with Hollywood actress and environmentalist Shailene Woodley, who said the contest was a great way to influence people to use less water.”

Grasslands, which require large amounts of water to maintain, are receiving increasing attention as climate change makes periods of drought more frequent and intense.

This is done to save water amidst climate change. A beautiful and clean garden requires more water so the issue of water scarcity will increasingly come to the fore.

The winner is Kathleen Murray, a resident of Tasmania, Australia. Murray’s lawns are already home to wildlife.

This global initiative was launched on the official Gotland website in Sweden. Explaining its reasoning on its website, it says: “Large amounts of water are used to irrigate lawns for aesthetics. As the world gets hotter, water scarcity is becoming a bigger problem.”

Water scarcity in urban areas is expected to impact 2.4 billion people by 2050, according to UNESCO data.

Murray said in a press release about his win: “I’m so proud! I know I’m about to get my 5 minutes of fame; even if it’s for having the ugliest lawn on the planet! I’m now free to mow again.”

According to organizers, Murray’s lawn “has deep, dry holes.”

Murray now has a certificate and a recycled T-shirt declaring himself “owner of the ugliest lawn in the world.”

Organizers added: “Gotland aims to save water by changing the green grass norm and showing Sweden and the world that sustainable behavior doesn’t have to be boring.”

The competition follows a similar competition for the ugliest lawn on Gotland in 2022.
