Xinhua News Agency, Stockholm, August 19 (Reporter Fu Yiming) The latest data released by the Swedish Central Bureau of Statistics on the 18th showed that in the first half of this year, the population of Sweden increased by 23,000, a decrease of 11,800 compared with the same period in 2022. The population is at its lowest level since 2005.
The Swedish Central Bureau of Statistics issued a bulletin on the same day, saying that in the first half of this year, the main reason why Sweden’s population growth was lower than the same period last year was the decrease in the number of newborns and the increase in Swedish immigration to other countries. Data show that as of June 30, 2023, the registered population of Sweden is 10.5453 million. A total of 51,600 births were born in Sweden in the first half of this year, the lowest level since 2003. Compared with the same period in 2022, the number of newborns will decrease by 5.5%. In the first six months of this year, a total of 26,400 people immigrated from Sweden to other countries, a year-on-year increase of 23%.
The data also shows that the number of residents leaving Sweden’s two largest cities, Stockholm and Gothenburg, exceeds the number of residents moving in. In particular, it is rare for the capital Stockholm to fail to attract more people to move in. Thomas Johansson, a demographer at Statistics Sweden’s Central Office, said the country’s big cities were no longer as attractive as they used to be.
