The Swedish parliament is voting today to reappoint Social Democrat Stefan Löfven as head of government. The 63-year-old announced his resignation last week after losing a vote of confidence in parliament. Subsequently, opposition leader Ulf Kristersson was given the chance to form a new government.
The exploratory talks to form a new center-right government remained fruitless. Parliament’s President Andreas Norlen then again instructed Löfven to form a government.
Stumbled upon deregulation of the rental market
Löfven had been Prime Minister since 2014, but his current minority government made up of Social Democrats and Greens was considered one of the weakest in Sweden for 70 years. It ultimately fell over plans to liberalize the regulated rental market. Löfven is the first head of government in Sweden to be forced to resign by a vote of no confidence.
