Sweden’s NATO Membership: Impact on Baltic Security and Latvian Interests

Swedes are self-interested. To hope that they will defend our interests is madness, political scientist Filips Rajevski admitted in TV24’s “Personality of the Day with Velta Purina”. He reminds us that Sweden always thinks about itself and its society: “You always have to remember that.”

The political scientist emphasizes that Latvia’s security is in our own hands: “From the point of view of political signals, the presence of Sweden in NATO and the Baltic Sea becoming an internal sea of NATO are unequivocally positive, but this does not solve our problems.”

Rajevski reminds all Latvian politicians and activists who are trying to find a solution to the problem outside, that there is no solution outside: “Our security solutions are inside – within us.”

However, he emphasizes that Sweden’s accession to NATO is clearly a positive signal and a very strong message for Russia: “The termination of the 200-year neutrality policy is a huge break and a huge change in Swedish politics.”

It has already been announced that Latvian officials, congratulating Sweden on its admission to NATO, acknowledged that Sweden’s admission will strengthen the security of the region and the entire alliance.

In a statement on social networks, President Edgars Rinkevičs stated that Sweden’s admission to the alliance will significantly improve both regional and allied security. “The Baltic Sea is now a NATO lake,” writes the president.

Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (JV) emphasizes that the security and defense of Latvia, NATO and the Baltic Sea region will benefit from this step.

On the other hand, Defense Minister Andris Spruds (P) congratulated Swedish Defense Minister Paul Jonsson and the people of Sweden. According to him, with Sweden as an ally, the deterrence and protection of the Baltic region has become stronger than ever before.

Latvia is eagerly waiting for the Swedish battalion to join the NATO extended presence battle group in Latvia, reports Spruds.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Krišjānis Kariņš (JV) also joined in the congratulations, who pointed out that Sweden’s joining the alliance will significantly strengthen the security of Latvia, the region and the alliance as a whole.

It has already been reported that all NATO members have ratified Sweden’s admission to NATO.

In response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Sweden applied for NATO membership in May 2022 together with Finland. Turkey and Hungary were late in ratifying the admission of the two countries.

Finland joined NATO last April.

Turkey ratified Sweden’s admission in January this year.

Hungary, whose Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has close ties to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, was the only member state that had not yet ratified Sweden’s admission to the alliance.

With the admission of Sweden to the NATO alliance, there are 32 member states.
