DAVOS. The Swedish leaders entered the jury room after the Tour de Ski sprint in Davos.
Kristine Stavå’s Skistad defeated Emma Ribom in the semi-finals.
– She should be disqualified, says Sweden’s women’s coach Stefan Thomson.
It was a Swedish triumph when Linn Svahn took home Wednesday’s sprint in the Tour de Ski, but for Emma Ribom the competition ended in tears.
She was on her way to the semi-finals when she fell in the last corner, having been hit by the Norwegian superstar Kristine Stavås Skistad who then made it all the way to the podium in the final.
“Not okay”
Emma Ribom shouted “Damn it, this is not okay” and was in tears after the semi-final.
– Very sad. I think that me and Linn (Svahn) solve the semi very well. We had such a clear plan how we wanted to tackle it. But then something happens in the last corner that makes me unable to stand on my feet. Very sad. A little extra sour when it’s a tour we’re going for and not just today’s competition, she says.
Ribom had not seen the incident, but had a clear picture of what happened.
– I haven’t seen anything, but I feel like I’m being completely run over from behind, and then it’s hard to stand on my feet, she says.
Have you spoken to Skistad yet?
– No.
Do you want to talk to her?
– No. It doesn’t feel like it’s worth it.
However, Kristine Stavås Skistad herself does not think she did anything wrong.
– The way I see it, maybe I was on the wrong side, but I don’t see it as my fault. It is hard to say. I haven’t seen the TV pictures, says the Norwegian.
The coaches to the jury room
The Swedish women’s coach Stefan Thomson thought that Skistad should have been washed.
He and his colleague Andreas Domeij drew the attention of the competition jury to the incident but were informed that it was a “race incident” which is no one’s fault.
After the competition, they went to the jury room to talk.
– I think it’s crystal clear when you see it, it’s an overrun. I think it’s wrong, says Stefan Thomson.
Thomson doesn’t think the jury is right.
– We don’t agree in any case, we’re not. It is clearly visible that she is knocking Emma down, but they judge it as a “race incident” and that Skistad cannot go anywhere. But I think that is irrelevant. Now that you see it, you almost get angrier. There will be such consequences, both for the entire tour and today’s race. So I think it’s boring, says Thomson and continues:
– She drives over and knocks Emma down, so she should be disqualified. That’s what feels boring. But now it’s judged like this, and we can’t do anything more and we can’t file a protest.
