Sweden’s Hopes Dashed for EC 2024 After Loss to Austria

There will probably be no EC in Germany for the Swedish men next year. This after another loss against Austria on Tuesday evening.

Although Sweden impressed with their intensity in the first half and created chances, they had to settle for 0-0 at halftime. And a goal had to be scored in that half, because then came the collapse. Austria made it 1-0 barely 10 minutes into the second half after defensive sloppiness on a throw-in and a quarter of an hour later Marko Arnautovic had punctuated the match with both 2 and 3-0.

Emil Holm had to score a consolation goal at the end, but the result 3-1 means that the dream of the football European Championship 2024 is very distant. In order for Sweden to qualify, Belgium and Austria must take a maximum of one point each in the remaining three matches. A highly unlikely scenario as Austria still have both Estonia and Azerbaijan to play against, while Sweden faces Belgium away in the next match.

Union captain Janne Andersson thus continues to be under extreme pressure. Since yesterday, the Football Association has expressed its support for him, while many are demanding his resignation. Andersson himself has said that he will not “bow down”.

“As I said before, I have a contract until next summer. I’m very disappointed with the result in today’s match, but I don’t give up because you lose football matches. I have lost many football matches in my life. You can ask one more time and I will answer the same thing”said an obviously annoyed national team captain at a press conference after the match, according to Aftonbladet.

The next match for the men’s national soccer team is the one October 16, 2023 against Belgium.
