Sweden, which has maintained a non-aligned and neutral policy for the past 200 years, has joined the military alliance North Atlantic Treaty Organization and NATO as an official member.

This is because they felt a security threat due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russia responded by creating a new military zone.

With the ‘neutral country’ Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) virtually confirmed, the security landscape in Northern Europe is being reorganized.

Among NATO member countries, the Hungarian parliament was the last to approve the membership ratification bill, and Sweden met the requirements for membership just one year and nine months after applying.

“The parliaments of all NATO member countries have approved Sweden’s accession to NATO. It is a historic day we are witnessing.”

Sweden has maintained a non-aligned neutral policy for over 200 years since 1814, but when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, it applied for NATO membership along with Finland.

Upon completing the remaining formal accession procedures, Sweden will become the 32nd NATO member to receive the protection of collective defense.

It’s a historic day. “It will make NATO stronger, Sweden and all of us safer.”

With Sweden’s accession to NATO, Russia is surrounded by NATO in the Baltic Sea, a strategic point in Northern Europe.

The Baltic Sea borders Kaliningrad, a Russian extraterritorial territory, and St. Petersburg, the country’s second largest city.

“I think this clearly demonstrates once again the strategic defeat that Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has inflicted on Russia.”

In response to NATO’s expansion into Northern Europe, Russia revived the ‘Moscow-Leningrad Military District’, which was abolished 14 years ago.

Local media reported today that Russian President Putin signed a presidential decree creating a new military district on the 1st of next month.

“There are many worrying challenges and risks in the current world, and therefore the strong potential and high combat readiness of our army and navy ensure Russia’s security and free and sovereign development.”

Western media predicted that Sweden and Finland joining NATO would also help control Russia’s Arctic strategy.
