Sweden’s Armand “Mondo” Duplantis improved his pole vault world record by clearing a 6.26-metre bar on his second attempt at the Diamond League meeting in Chorzów, Poland on Sunday.
Duplantis thus surpassed his own record of 6.25 metres, which he set a few weeks ago at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where he crowned his successful career as an athletics star.
“Mondo” surprised everyone in February 2020 when he broke the record of 6.14 metres that had been set in 1994 by the Ukrainian Sergei Bubka, who was the first to exceed six metres in pole vault and became a historical benchmark in this discipline in the 1990s.
Since then, this is the tenth time that Duplantis has eclipsed the record, although it is the first time he has done so at the Olympic Games.
The podium in Chorzów was the same as in the recent summer competition. American Sam Kendricks, who won silver in Paris 2024, took second place again with a mark of six metres, while Greek Emmanouil Karalis finished third, just as he did at the Olympics.
