Sweden was one of the most peaceful countries in Europe. Now they top the very negative statistics.

In the course of eight years, the situation has gone from bad to worse for the Swedes. Swedish criminologist points to three reasons why.

While Sweden has experienced an increase in lethal violence with firearms since the mid-2000s, no other European country can point to the same development. On the contrary: In most other places, the numbers are going down.

While most Western European countries reached the peak of firearms killings in the 80s and 90s, that changed for Sweden in 2013. This emerges from a new report from the Crime Prevention Council (Brå), a government body that gives Swedish politicians and decision-makers advice on how to fight crime.
