Jens Stoltenberg’s mandate as Secretary General of NATO expires on October 1 and a new Secretary General is expected to take his place. The decision on a new secretary general is made by consensus.
Sweden belongs to the group of allies who want to see Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands, as the next Secretary General.

In a time characterized by increased uncertainty and a deteriorating security policy situation, a strong NATO is needed, which through deterrence and defense contributes to the security of all allies, and to promoting peace and freedom, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
– Mark Rutte is known as a reliable leader with wide trust from north to south. NATO’s unity is a strength for the alliance, says Energy and Industry Minister Ebba Busch.
– Europe is in a security policy turning point. A united NATO with strong leadership is central to meeting the challenges and threats of our time, says Labor Market and Integration Minister Johan Pehrson.
