2023 is a thing of the past, with 2024 a blank slate. Those conditions also apply to the Swedish Junior crowns when you now go from the group stage to the finals in the JVM. Gone is the well-deserved first place in Group A – in front of them instead is a quarter-final against an opponent with nothing to lose in the alpine nation of Switzerland.
Below is NHL.com/sv’s review of the four quarter-finals in JVM 2024, all of which will be played on Tuesday in Gothenburg.
SWEDEN – SWITZERLAND (19.30, SCANDINAVIUM)
Three straight zeros and a chance to go unbeaten throughout the group stage. Then the Junior crowns fell against rival Finland 4-3 after penalties in the last group stage match. Not that it played any major role as Sweden had already secured the group victory with the 2-0 win over Canada.
And national team captain Magnus Hävelid chose to take with him what Sweden did well in the group stage as a whole, rather than the final loss against Finland.
– Of course there are many parts we can take with us, said Hävelid to NHL.com/sv. Apart from the first period today (against Finland), we can take three games and two periods with us. We show class there. Good powerplay and boxplay clearly passed as well. I especially like the second match, but also today here sometimes. When we are crisp in our passing game, then we become better in our defensive game as well. It is connected over the entire track. Well done in the group, I think.
Switzerland now awaits in the quarter-finals tomorrow – a nation Hävelid and the Junior crowns are well aware of.
– An opposition that we have great respect for, said Hävelid. We met them quite recently and played a close game which ended in a win for us with the odd goal.
– We are looking forward to coming out on Tuesday in front of a packed Scandinavium.
The lead in the Swedish points league is shared by four players, who have all accounted for six points so far in the tournament: Otto Stenberg (3+3), Noah Östlund (2+4), Felix Unger Sörum (1+5) and Theo Lindstein (1+ 5). Jonathan Lekkerimäki has accounted for three goals and two assists and Axel Sandin Pellikka has recorded two assists. Just in Sandin Pellikka there is a savings capital The junior crowns hope to receive a dividend from in the playoffs.
Between the posts, Hugo Hävelid is expected to get the chance from the start in the quarter-finals. Hävelid has played two games in the group stage and so far has not conceded a single goal in the tournament.
