Tehran has agreed to compensate the families of foreign victims of the Ukrainian Boeing accidentally shot down by Iran in January, the Swedish Foreign Minister announced on Thursday.
Iran and the various countries concerned “have signed an agreement in principle” and “there is no doubt” that Tehran will pay, even if the exact amount has yet to be discussed, according to Minister Ann Linde’s statements to the Swedish agency TT confirmed to AFP by her spokesperson.
The 176 victims were mainly Iranian-Canadians, but also Afghans, British and Swedes as well as eleven Ukrainians.
Amounts not fixed
“We have signed an agreement in principle that we will negotiate with Iran on compensation for the relatives of the victims,” said the minister.
As to whether Tehran will actually pay a sum, “there is no doubt about it. However, we do not know how much it will be, negotiations must clarify it, “she added.
No confirmation was immediately available on the Iranian side.
Shot “by mistake”
Seventeen Swedes or residents of Sweden were on board on 8 January.
At the end of June, Iran had already officially requested the assistance of the Bureau of Investigation and Analysis (BEA) in the recovery of data from the device’s black boxes, announced the French body, internationally recognized for analyzing the air crashes.
The Iranian armed forces admitted on January 11 that they had “three times earlier” shot down the aircraft that had just taken off from Tehran for Kiev.
