Sweden to send diplomats to Turkey over disagreements

Stockholm, May 16 (Prensa Latina) Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist reported today that he will send diplomats to Turkey to discuss Ankara’s objections to his country’s membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

According to Hultqvist, negotiators will figure out what the real problem is and how to solve it in order to find a compromise.

The day before, Helsinki announced that Finland intends to join the Atlantic alliance, but this decision must be ratified by Parliament.

Then, the head of the Swedish Foreign Ministry, Ann Linde, stated that the ruling Social Democratic party is in favor of joining the military bloc.

On May 13, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that his nation opposes the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO, as both countries have members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.

Meanwhile, the Turkish foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, stated in Berlin that the majority of the Turkish population was opposed to the accession of Sweden and Finland to the Atlantic alliance and asked his government to block it.

According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the alliance believes in the possibility of reaching an understanding with Ankara on this issue.

The process of accepting a new member to the body is controlled by the North Atlantic Council, the main political decision-making body of the alliance.

If an application for membership is submitted, it will first be considered by the council, after which the agreement must be ratified at the national level in the 30 countries of the alliance.
