Pro-Palestinian activists today interrupted a debate in the Swedish Parliament on Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank by throwing a bag at the Swedish foreign minister.
Protesters began chanting as Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergaard returned to her seat after speaking on the floor of Parliament.
“They started shouting and arguing in the gallery (…), then someone threw an object towards us, the MPs,” MP An-Sophie Alm told AFP, clarifying that the object was thrown in the direction where the minister was sitting Foreign.
According to Swedish media, the object fell a few rows behind the bench where Stenergaard was sitting, who is seen on video getting up and leaving the room very quickly.
The MP added that she saw “Maria reacting to the noise and running out of the room”. The bag contained tomatoes, according to Swedish media.
The chairman of the parliamentary session immediately asked the security to remove the protesters from the room and interrupted the debate. According to the Swedish news agency TT, three people handed themselves over to the police.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson condemned the actions of these protesters. “I now expect a thorough investigation into how this could have happened and strong measures to keep MPs and ministers safe in the Parliament building,” Christerson told TT.
