The country crossed the symbolic limit of 1 million cases in early May

Sweden came out on top in the rate of infection among EU countries, AFP and DPA reported, citing information from European health authorities.
Today, the Scandinavian country, whose coronavirus strategy, which includes relatively few restrictions, has attracted international attention, has reached 577 new cases per 100,000 people in the last 14 days. This is the highest figure among all countries in the European Economic Area. Sweden crossed the symbolic limit of 1 million infected in early May.

Lithuania is slightly behind Sweden, with 563 new cases, and Cyprus is in third place with 522, according to data from the European Center for Infectious Disease Control and Prevention. At the same time, Sweden’s neighboring Finland reported 53 new cases per 100,000 people.

“Many countries have reported higher levels than ours today, so it can be considered that this phenomenon simply reflects a belated increase in the number of cases within the third wave in Sweden,” Swedish chief epidemiologist Anders Tegnel told a news conference.

The EC has contracted another 1.8 billion doses of Pfizer by the end of 2023.

Today, the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic reached 14,351 people. This puts the country at one of the average mortality rates in Europe, but registers significantly more deaths than its neighbors such as Denmark and Finland.

Despite measures introduced last year, including closing bars and restaurants at 8:30 p.m., restrictions in the country remain relatively less stringent than elsewhere in Europe, AFP reported.
