STOCKHOLM, May 2 (Xinhua) — Just a month after Sweden announced that COVID-19 was no longer considered dangerous and repealed health measures to control the disease, the national public health agency said on Monday that it was ready to introduce new restrictive measures in case another wave of the virus hits the country.
In one of three hypothetical scenarios, the agency described a situation in which a potential new strain of the virus could evade the immune system and cause serious illness.
“We would then be in a situation where the vaccination effort would not be enough, and we would have to introduce measures such as limiting social contact and restricting public gatherings, and recommending working from home,” said on television. Swedish Sara Byfors, head of unit at the agency.
The agency also presented two other possible, less worrying scenarios. However, even if the worst-case scenario is not considered the most likely, there are still signs that the spread of the infection is accelerating again.
According to the agency, at the end of April, an average of 25 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 every day in Sweden, a figure that could double by mid-May. End
