– It is about our survival, says Minister of Infrastructure Tomas Eneroth.
The Swedish Transport Administration plans to build 3,000 kilometers of electric road. According to TT, the E20 will be the world’s first permanent electric road for heavy transport when it is ready in 2025.
The road gets a rail in the middle that charges the vehicles continuously. It is not yet entirely clear which technology Sweden will use.
The electric roads will contribute to cutting emissions in the transport sector, which accounts for a third of Sweden’s emissions of greenhouse gases.
However, the opposition party Moderaterna criticizes the government for not investing in renewable electricity.
– There are many players who warn against the fact that we do not have the electricity we need to restructure the transport sector. It can not be powered by imported Polish coal power, says Maria Stockhaus in the Moderates.
