Just before 5:30 p.m. Swedish time, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson handed over Sweden’s instrument of accession to the US government, which is the so-called depository for the North Atlantic Treaty. Sweden is thus a member of NATO.

NATO is an intergovernmental organization, which consists of both a political and a military part. As a member, Sweden becomes part of NATO’s collective defence. Sweden is NATO’s 32nd member state.
