Wednesday at 12:00 escaped several chimpanzees from the Furuviksparken zoo in Gävle in Sweden. The search for chimpanzees was quickly launched with both shooters and drones.
Because the zoo did not have enough anesthetic to anesthetize the escaped chimps, four chimps were shot and killed in short order.
The fifth escaped chimpanzee returned alone.
– We have vets on site, but unfortunately there isn’t enough anesthetic for all the chimpanzees. The only way out then is to shoot them, because the most important thing right now is that nobody gets hurt, information manager Annika Troselius of Parks and Resorts, which owns Furuviksparken, tells Expressen.
Butchers the zoo
The zoo held it low, took responsibility for the incident, and apologized.
– The whole situation is tragic in every possible way. This shouldn’t be possible. We have to take full responsibility and investigate this, says Troselius.
Gunilla Brodrej, young editor and cultural critic of Expressen, makes strong criticisms of the zoo. In a comment writes that the zoo has created “a real bloodbath” and suggests they should start investing in rabbits and cows instead.
– If you have wildlife, there’s a lot to consider. Also that the worst can happen. And as I understand it, they didn’t have enough anesthetic, so they are forced to kill three chimpanzees. It’s shocking, I must say, Brodej says in one video interview.
She agrees that people’s safety should come first, but at the same time she says:
– If you run a zoo you have to be professional, and in this case I don’t think they were.
Open the review
It’s unclear how the chimpanzees managed to get out. The zoo will now investigate the case.
In addition to a full investigation, Troselius also promises that they will do whatever it takes to prevent a similar incident in the future.
Furuviksparken is closed for the season, but there were guests in the hotel that belongs to the property. Employees must have informed guests of what happened.
