Sweden Constructs New Submarines to Counter Russia and Secure NATO Borders, Politico Reports

Sweden begins construction of two new submarines to secure NATO’s maritime borders and counter Russia. This was reported by the American publication Politico.

“The 66-meter diesel-electric submarines, named Blekinge and Skåne, <…> designed to patrol NATO’s eastern regions in the Baltic Sea, monitoring and countering Moscow’s maritime activities against the backdrop of ever-deteriorating relations between Russia and Europe,” it says in the publication’s article. According to Politico, the submarines will be launched in 2027 and 2028.

For Sweden, these submarines are the first built since the mid-1990s. Both vessels belong to type A26. It is assumed that they will be on combat duty in the Baltic Sea and in line with other ships from the Nordic countries. Norway ordered 4 new submarines, and Denmark, which completely abandoned its submarine fleet, announced its desire to return it.

In early January, the Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces, Mikael Büden, called on the country’s citizens to be prepared for a possible military conflict due to the calls of the Swedish general, it was reported RT. He stated that the situation was very serious and now there is a transition from words to actions.
