Sweden, which voted against joining the eurozone, has traditionally had a more secretive relationship with Brussels than other member states. This suggests that Sweden will fulfill its obligations under the presidency, but will not be overzealous.
The presidency can help shape the bloc’s agenda, but it should also be a neutral broker, helping to achieve the complex compromises without which the European Union cannot function.
The war in Ukraine, trade, climate change and the protection of the fundamental values of the European Union are the topics that Sweden has made priorities during its presidency. The plans of the Swedish presidency could also turn out to be its domestic policy. Although the Sweden Democrats have abandoned calls for Sweden to leave the European Union, the party’s hard line on many important areas, such as migration, could cause divisions in Sweden and limit room for manoeuvre.
