The academic from the Faculty of International Studies of the Universidad del Rosario, Óscar Palma, referred to the issue: ”Basically to guarantee their own security, to know that their independence, their territorial integrity, their sovereignty is being guaranteed, they see the NATO as a great support, as the only way to guarantee that possibility,” he assured.

Experts note that the conflict in Ukraine prompted countries to abandon the principle of neutrality.

“This is undoubtedly a consequence of Russia’s foreign policy and the war actions on Ukraine, Finland has had a very uncomfortable past, it had it with the Soviet Union, there was a neutrality after the war, but Russia’s actions on Ukraine immediately they force Sweden and Finland to take actions to defend themselves” said Óscar Palma.

During the NATO summit that took place this week in Madrid, Turkey, which opposed the accession of the countries He gave the green light in exchange for his demands being met.

”For Turkey, Finland and specifically Sweden, it protects some people who for Turkey are terrorists, so let’s say Turkey’s interest is also at stake here, it’s not a free card, it’s not a free pass the fact that Turkey has accepted to Sweden and Finland” said the academic from Universidad del Rosario.

It was Russia that took the news with caution, the expansion of NATO seen in the eyes of Vladimir Putin is a threat. Moscow believes that the military alliance could place weapons on its border.

”Finland has a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia in such a way that the possibility in Finnish territory to have some units, armies, artillery, even some tactical nuclear weapons, because they also represent some way in which NATO can dissuade Russia more head-on,” Palma affirmed.

The possibility of more tensions in Europe is not ruled out

“There may not be a direct increase in military operations in Ukraine, since it is a scenario that has its own logic, but it may be that the tension felt in Europe due to accession does generate some other movements, some war fronts new ones” concluded the academic from Universidad del Rosario.

Countries like Georgia or Azerbaijan, also bordering Russia, could be the next to resume their intention to join NATO. It is worth mentioning that this process is not immediate and that several months and demands from NATO are needed for these two countries to join the military alliance.
