Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland applied to host the Women’s European Football Championship in 2025. That championship went to Switzerland.
Now the plan is to make another attempt, to get the European Championship in 2029, but without two of the countries.
The message gives the chairmen of the Swedish and Danish associations, Fredrik Reinfeldt and Jesper Møller, at a digital press conference.
– When we tried for 2025, a criticism that must be taken to heart was that it was a bit too spread out, that some of the arenas could be called into question, says Fredrik Reinfeldt.
Now they have concluded that it is better not to be more than two organizing countries. Jesper Møller says they wanted to include Sweden, because Sweden has an arena for 50,000 spectators.
Out of respect for Norway and Finland, which were involved in the previous attempt, have taken up the matter with them.
– We believe that the strongest bid right now from the Nordics is a Danish-Swedish bid, especially with a large final arena in Stockholm, says Jesper Møller.
He is referring to Friends’ arena, but it is otherwise not nailed down exactly which arenas may be relevant. Now the application must be prepared.
– We will go through it. It’s pretty obvious that we’re talking about Stockholm, Malmö, Gothenburg, maybe another place, but we haven’t come that far, says Fredrik Reinfeldt.
