Sweden admits wrong – and gives explanation: “It can happen”

On Tuesday morning, Dejan Kulusevski tested positive for covid-19. After that, Blågult chose to test the rest of the squad again. In the afternoon, they received the test results and then the players went by bus to the training at Gothia Park Academy. The problem? Mattias Svanberg joined in – even though he also tested positive.

Now the national team captain Janne Andersson explains what happened.

– The answers were delayed and the last answer that came was Mattias Svanbergs. And then a communication failure occurred in the management staff. It was thought that all the answers were negative, and so we went down to the training. When we got down there, it turned out that there was someone who was positive and it was Mattias, says Andersson.

– We could have done all that handling much better together. It was a communication failure that could happen.

Before training began, the Bologna midfielder had to leave the facility.

National team manager Stefan Pettersson was asked at a press conference on Wednesday if he feels that there are things that Sweden should have done differently regarding the recharging before the European Championships, and then he replied:

– It will certainly be there when we have time to look at this properly and evaluate. You can always do things better. Then we have to react to things that happen and take it then.

– But we would not, for example, have gone down to training yesterday without having received all the answers one hundred percent ready. It was a communication miss.

Pettersson continued:

– But I have almost not had time to analyze. Now we have to solve what is to be solved and then we take the rest later.
