Currently, more than 220 thousand Swedbank customers use biometrics in Latvia. This is the largest commercial bank in Latvia in terms of assets.
“When shopping with a card online, for additional security, customers are directed to the Internet bank, where it is necessary to confirm the purchase with the chosen means of authentication. unauthorized use of data, “says Liene Gasiņa, Head of Card Support, Swedbank.
In order to use the “Swedbank” card for online purchases, the customer must first activate the possibility to make online purchases with this card in the Internet bank or mobile application. Then, when making an online purchase, the customer is offered a confirmation method that is used last, Smart-ID or the new option – biometrics. For example, if a customer used biometrics when they last logged in to the Swedbank app, it will automatically be offered as an online purchase confirmation method. Thus, the system keeps track of which method the customer prefers. However, the customer can also choose the second method if he does not want or cannot use the previously used one at the moment.
Despite the introduction of this new and convenient option, Swedbank advises everyone to always make sure of the reliability of the chosen online store before purchasing and to protect their card data securely. “We also remind you that if the customer is asked to confirm the transaction with Smart-ID codes, always make sure that the transaction is correct. Never confirm with Smart-ID / biometrics any activity that you have not initiated yourself. “The safest solution is to block the card and apply for a card replacement. If you rarely use the card for online purchases, you can use the option to pay for online purchases with it only temporarily to make the purchase,” emphasizes the bank. Already reportedthat various types of cyber fraudsters have recently become more active, who have also scammed large sums of money from the Latvian population.
