Swedbank has introduced the possibility to confirm online purchases with a fingerprint or a facial image, LETA told the bank.
“When shopping with a card online, for additional security, customers are directed to the Internet bank, where it is necessary to confirm the purchase with the chosen authentication means. Now these means include biometrics or a fingerprint or facial image used on a smart device,” .
She also pointed out that additional confirmation of the purchase ensures double verification and prevents unauthorized use of card data.
In order to use the “Swedbank” card for online purchases, the customer must first activate the possibility to make online purchases with this card in the Internet bank or mobile application. Then, when making an online purchase, the customer is offered a confirmation method that is used last, for example, if the customer used biometrics when logging in to the Swedbank app for the last time, it will be automatically offered as an online purchase confirmation method. However, the customer can also choose the second method if he does not want or cannot use the previously used one at the moment.
According to the bank, more than 220,000 Swedbank customers currently use biometrics in Latvia.
At the same time, the bank reminded before making a purchase to always make sure of the reliability of the selected online store, to protect the card data, as well as never to confirm actions with “Smart-ID” or biometrics that have not been initiated by the customer. If there is a suspicion that the payment card data may have become known to third parties, the card must be blocked and a card replacement requested. If the card for online purchases is rarely used, it is possible to activate the card for online purchases only temporarily to make a specific purchase.
