In the building of the US State Department, unknown persons scrawled a swastika. This symbol was found on the wall of an elevator next to the office of the State Department’s special representative for combating anti-Semitism.
Interestingly, all the elevators in the building are located inside the secured perimeter. Surveillance cameras cover the entrances to all protected areas.
According to the publication Axios, it happened on Monday, July 26th. The next day, State Department officials sent out a notification throughout the facility condemning the vandalism. Now the department is investigating the incident.
In June, the State Department decided to hang an LGBT flag over its residence. This was stated by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. Speaking at a videoconference organized by the Atlantic Council, he said that Washington welcomes the display of symbols of the LGBT community on the buildings of the country’s embassies and consulates abroad. At the same time, the Secretary of State stressed that the department empowers ambassadors around the world.
